Tyre Pyrolysis Oil (TPO) is a liquid fuel produced through the pyrolysis process, in which end-of-life tyres are thermally decomposed at high temperatures in the absence of oxygen. This process breaks down the rubber into hydrocarbon vapours, which are cooled and condensed into oil, alongside gas and a solid carbon-rich residue.
The resulting oil is typically dark brown to black and contains a complex mixture of hydrocarbons. Its energy content makes it a potential fuel for industrial heating applications, including compatible furnaces, kilns, boilers and process heaters. Recovering oil from discarded tyres also provides a route for converting waste material into a usable energy resource.
